The Chaos & Depth of Creative Women

CREATIVE WOMEN HAVE QUALITIES THAT ARE OFTEN REQUIRED FOR THEIR WORK BUT CAN POSE A CHALLENGE IN THEIR PERSONAL LIVES IF NOT PROPERLY UNDERSTOOD. WHEN COMBINED WITH TRAUMA RESPONSES THESE QUALITIES CAN BECOME POWERFUL FUEL FOR CREATING PROBLEMS OR STRESS.  In this blog, I explore the challenge that can come from being naturally creative & female in the modern world. We consider the nature of chaos, our relationship with change & how we navigate meaning in our lives.

To be creative requires depth of feeling and a quest for meaning that can not come from a shallow existence. In its nature, artistry of any means is an expression of what is not always fully visible, a feeling, a knowing or expression and love for something we feel or see through our experience, but can not always be expressed through words alone.

Many creative people are empathic, have intuitive influences and are tuned into different layers of perception, consciusness and insights of energetic exchange.

Often, the path of a creative is to bring to life these ideas and make form from something we see but others do not. Creation requires a depth of meaning that something matters to us, and we have a passion or desire powerful enough to invest ourselves in the process of bringing something to life in a new way.

Art is an act of devotion to life, honouring and replicating the creative process itself.

To be creative requires vulnerability, commitment and dedication as we master a craft, experiment and be present enough to try, fail and build knowledge and skill. It requires strength, courage and bravery as we share our work only for it to be criticised, ignored or not satisfy what we hoped to express. Or to become successful and be exposed, scrutinised and seen by many people who may fall from extremes of complete adoration to a powerful dislike because of who we are, what we create and what we stand for.

Being a creative person both deepens our feeling experience and expresses it. To embody what is required for a creative to thrive, there is no prescribed path, ease or comfort. Often, their lives are accompanied by patterns and energy that mainstream agendas and “common people” simply can’t understand or tolerate.
Most often, creative people feel deeply and are drawn to chaos and change. A direct contrast to systems and culture that prefer predictability, measurable outcomes and shallow, transactional experiences.

As creative women, our natural curiosity is part of the creative process.

It requires us to question, search, uncover, and experiment, all pastimes that disrupt the status quo, which will make people uncomfortable.  Curiosity is the epitome of change and chaos energy. Curiosity is the white rabbit that leads us to whole new worlds; only the courageous dare to even begin to follow.

Like the boundless energy of the adventure-seeking child, we can not contain the urge to know and to seek a better alternative, see new possibilities and search for the next creative hit or insight. A craving few understand.

The drive to follow our emotion, interest and energetic inspiration can lead us to do, try or explore things that we might have been told are not good forus. We might find ourselves attracted to the taboo, what seems different, interesting, but may actually be harmful to us,  ultimately.

Often, we can only stop this strong urge through following it or acts of force upon ourselves. Withdrawal, restraint, self-coercion or desperate containment of part of ourselves.

The additional problem we have as creative women can be the reality of being female. All it takes in our modern diagnostic world to be labelled, diagnosed as disordered and misunderstood is to be emotional, be “unstable” in our energetic nature, to be unpredictable. The nature of being female is a diagnosis in itself.

If we also combine a natural creative drive with being female and then difficult, challenging, stressful or abusive or neglectful childhood environments, we may have developed a further layer of complex trauma symptoms and responses that feed our addiction to chaos. To us, chaos, drama, and stress feel normal. And many creative women can spend years simply existing and surviving off the energy of stress and live lives completely driven by trauma symptoms without realising it.

Our empathic nature, ability to see potential and a confused intuition can lead us to connect with people and environments that might take advantage of us. We become a target for exploitation and further abuse. It can be a cocktail of destruction as we lead ourselves into more harm than good, seeking comfort, ease or understanding.

When we are curious in our nature and when we stifle that curiosity, it adds, feeds, and can eventually cause more stress, trauma and struggle in our lives. More so when we are curious about seeking freedom from our pain, suffering and trauma symptoms that we may have also repressed, ignored, stifled and contained.  In our quest to keep discovering, find insight or soothe ourselves.  And following our addiction or craving toward the creative forces of chaos that allow us to make the art we love and need to express to thrive.

Trauma happens when we experience a deep hurt due to circumstances that happen against our will, that are shocking, disruptive or cause a drastic shift in our psyche or worldview.

Naturally creative people who experience trauma respond differently that non creatives who do.

For us, when we can not explain, fathom or understand the experiences of our life, curiosity kicks in, and we need to explore and create meaning.  The energy of the trauma is amplified, or more so, the effect and how we process our experiences is magnified through our imagination and creative minds seeking artistic expression, depth and context to what may be life-altering experiences.

We see the power and possibility of change, and we feel the deep impact of what happened to us, even if we are not acknowledged, given the space or supported to process it. The depth of the wound can grow and feed many hurtful symptoms.

Anxiety, depression, anger, withdrawal, overwhelm, which when our curious mind denies, so we can keep exploring purpose, can manifest as long-term health issues such as chronic pain, neurodiverse disorders and more.

The pain creates the rabbit hole within us and manifests like this because on a subconscious level, we use our creative mind to try find solutions, but we also repress ourselves to stop triggers or deep emotions from arising. It causes endless confusion and a battle within ourselves that we can not win.

Being creative and now confused and in pain and living in what has become our normal chaotic existence, we try everything and anything to help when we are not satisfied with the shallow healing options we are offered.

This is when we may spend years moving through one healing modality to another, exploring the holistic nature of our health. We might find things that help, for a while, short-term fixes or relief or tools that support us, but because of our chaotic nature, life events happen again and again, and we are further hurt or re-traumatised, and our symptoms come back.

These states of healing and re-traumatisation can cause us great disruption and discontent, but since we are creative and now have some solutions, and when channelled well, our creative processes and artistry can improve. We notice that. Our art and creativity gain depth and meaning, and the energy we once couldn’t contain has a more fulfilling outlet.

We realise (if only subconsciously) that our best work comes from our deep feelings and perceptions, and our ability to try and change things and do things differently.

When used correctly, this can become part of our healing process. When we notice this, we can move to the next phase of healing. To understand and integrate these patterns and skills whilst we withdraw from the chaos of life that hurts us. We need to learn how to find peace and instead use our energy and channel it in a new way. Away from our addiction to chaos and instead toward a calm depth that we can energetically contain.

What we need to do is look at ourselves as our own creation and use the same depth and curiosity as we do with our own creative work. We need to see and understand the energies, patterns involved and become curious about them, but in a more conscious, organised and aware state. Learning how to become masters of the craft of life design and create a life masterpiece that supports and sustains our creative energy and expressions.

When we use our explorations wisely to change our responses and choices, and experiment with new ways of reacting. We become our greatest work of art.  Through becoming our own creative process, we release the binds of the issues we cause. Then we craft, with skill.

We can use all the tools and skills and healing modalities we have learned to really define and master our life as a work of art. We can integrate our experience with our ideas, which happens through embodying and accepting what does work while letting go and releasing what doesn't, like we have learned how to do during our creative processes. We can master and learn to love and use our depth and chaotic nature to heal.

Most traditional or common therapies don't offer this sort of deep, organised, conscious healing. We are treated as patients, fixed in little parts, we are gaslit and told we feel too much, think too deeply or create our own drama. The reality is, creative people heal differently.
